Close to 60 local orienteers, from first timers to a 40-year veteran, were present for the third event in the Trailhead Summer Solstice Series.
As the 40 year veteran who was organizing the meet I moved the start/ finish area from the Sportsplex to the nearby community of Merivale Gardens and re-named the map back to the original Merivale Gardens name for the occasion. The new venue seemed to be popular with the participants as it gave many a chance to explore the complex terrain bordering Slack Road to the south, terrain which is normally out of reach for all but the quickest and fittest during a one-hour event starting from the Sportsplex.
As would be expected the quickest and fittest still dominated the top of the results with Robbie (Antelope) Anderson checking in at all controls and returning to the finish in just over 52 minutes. Others who got to all controls within the time limit were Jeff (Turbo)Teutsch Emily (Faster) Kemp and Eric (Fastest) Kemp. Andrew Cornett and Frederic Bedard used their advancing age and handicap points to also register bonus points.
A number of others marked themselves as ‘ones to watch’ as they scored very good points in the sometimes difficult terrain. Keep an eye on Bruce Laurich, Chris Meuller, the Norman family and Kristen Beseman among others. Experience in events such as the Trailhead Summer Solstice Series should serve them well at this summer’s Canadian Championships.
Thank you to the meet crew who kept things from being chaotic, especially controller, Linda Connell, registrars Lynda Scrivens and Sheila Duke as well as Richard and Lorna Guttormson who were instrumental in getting the meet area set up on time.
Finally a big thank you to those who helped with the important job of cleaning up the meet site and to Anne Teutsch, Jeff Teutsch, Lynda Scrivens and Stephen Norman who did the all-important job of picking up the control flags.
