Championship Events

For the Championship events we have selected and newly mapped three very distinct areas within the City of Ottawa. The middle and long are on the Carp Ridge. The two locations are close together but couldn't be more different. The "Spreckly Maze" features a confusing network of trails and "The Barrens" is an equally puzzling but trail-less network of open rock and water features. For the Sprint we have mapped the Montreal Road Campus of the National Research Council. No stately campus quadrangles here, just a warren of purpose-built research labs and woods.

Pat de St Croix Memorial, Middle Distance, Friday, August 20

Spreckley’s Trails. Bryan Chubb and Bill Anderson. Spring 2009. ISOM 2000

Ottawa Orienteering Club will be honouring the memory of Pat de St. Croix at this event. Pat, who through her positive outlook, boundless energy, and expert organizational skills, contributed to the development and growth of orienteering at the club, provincial, and national level for over 40 years. The club will be donating ten percent (10%) of the gross revenue from this event to the Canadian Cancer Society in Pat's honour.

Spreckley's Trails is a detailed forest and marsh area in the middle of the Carp Ridge. Drawn with a 2.5 m contour interval, this area will test the competitor's ability to interpret the fine topo detail and extensive trail network at high speed. Maps will be printed at 1:10000 and at 1:7500 for some classes.

The area is a very detailed granite topography with some rock features and is dominated by a few large beaver ponds or lakes and many smaller marshes and water features between the rocky ridges. Most of the area is crisscrossed by a complex irregular trail network. The runnability is generally good on the granite ridges with denser forest or marshes in the lower lying areas. Mature deciduous forest covers the area with a mix of white pine and cedar in places. Elevation topography is generally less than 15m.

We are fortunate to have the cooperation of landowners who have given us access to their land and the city woodland beyond.

Sprint Distance Saturday, August 21 - WRE

National Research Council (NRC) Campus. Andrew Cornett & Ales Hejna. Fall 2009. ISSOM 2007

Very much like a large university campus, the NRC site also includes a large wooded area with traditional forest features. Drawn with 2 m contours and to be printed at 1:5000. There will be good (elevated) spectator sites to watch the WRE speedsters try to beat 5 min. per Km!

Participatory Meet
Saturday, August 21

We will also have an introductory meet following the event where we welcome you to invite your Ottawa hosts, your non-orienteering family members, friends, perhaps your young children, to try the sport on a beginner or intermediate course after being on hand to cheer you to the finish of the COC sprint.

Long Distance Sunday August 22

Barrens/Wellness. Ales Hejna & Bill Anderson. Fall 2009. ISOM 2000, 2.5 m contours

The signature area for the COC's, we have been looking forward to using this interesting area on the Carp Ridge for several years.

The Barrens is a remote and trail-less area of bare rock/grassy clearings and runnable forest separated by a maze of connected water features. Route choice planning will be essential to avoid navigational "dead ends".

The Barrens connects to the Wellness Centre area of the map via a narrow gap between lakes and into more traditional mixed forest around the Carp Ridge Wellness Centre.

Printing will probably be at 1:10000 for all classes.

Model Map

The model event provides an opportunity to experience maps and terrain similar to the COC Middle and Long competitive areas. Participants can go out on their own time and find one or all of the control locations. There is no timing or reporting. The model event site will have controls placed and can be used during the following hours: Thursday 9:00AM to noon, Friday 9:00AM to 11:00AM.

Choice of Class

Please be sure to choose the best entry classification for your abilities, your membership and your age. The age class categories are only available to members of clubs affiliated with COF, USOF or other International Orienteering Federations. Others must enter the 'Open' categories.

Note: if you haven't an affiliated club - we at OOC invite you to join our club.

Embargoed Areas

The embargoed areas encompass roughly:

  • Marchhurst Road on the east to Carp Road on the west, just south of Kinburn Sideroad to 500 metres south of Thomas Dolan Parkway
  • Area bounded by Rockcliff Pkwy, Blair Road, Ogilvie Rd, and Bathgate Dr.

They are marked with a blue boundary on this Google map and will be embargoed until the events.

Open Categories

Open Categories are provided for those participants who are not members of clubs affiliated with COF, USOF or other federations affiliated with IOF and also for participants who feel the course for their age class is not the course best suited to their abilities.

For Long and Middle Distance Events

  • Open 1 is the easiest with all the controls (check points/flags) on "handrails"'. Handrails are features that are really easy to follow like trails, fences, edge of fields, ridges. Navigation is easy. Remember orienteering maps are very detailed - even large one meter boulders are on the map.
  • Open 2 has controls on major features but just off the handrails. The courses are designed with stoppers (big features that are hard to miss) to help keep the orienteer on track.
  • Open 3 is an intermediate course and requires more advanced navigation skills. The controls will be located near big features but the route to get there may not have obvious handrails.
  • Open 4-Open 8 are available to people who want to run on a particular advanced course but do not qualify for any age category on that course.
