This year the Ottawa Orienteering Club is excited to announce that there will be a consolidated Event Centre at Carleton University for the duration of all COC week activities. Carleton’s modern university campus has very recently been mapped to ISSOM standards and provides a beautiful location for Wednesday’s Chase Sprint.
As the event centre for the week, Carleton will be where much of the action takes place. It will host the Sass Peepre Junior Training Camp, the COF conference and Saturday evening’s COC Banquet. The central registration/help desk for any and all of the week’s activities will be on campus as will a community room with internet access and fun and games for all. Carleton also offers fitness facilities and an Olympic size pool which are available to participants at minimal cost.
Best of all is Carleton’s location within the Nation’s Capital. Sitting in the crook between the lovely Rideau River and the UNESCO World Heritage Rideau Canal, Carleton is an outdoor enthusiast's haven. Recreation paths run along both the canal and the river, greenspace and parkland on the other side of both waterways are easily accessible by foot from Carleton. Great places for training, site-seeing, a breath of fresh air, a leisurely stroll, a picnic. The Central Experimental Farm, arboretum, and gardens are at Carleton’s doorstep – just a step across the the canal via the Hartwell Locks, one of the famous manually operated locks, originally built in the 1840’s – a must see for anyone not familiar with canal systems. On the other side of campus lies Vincent Massey Park – mapped to ISOM standards for all those wanting a bit of extra orienteering. (The Vincent Massey map will be available for purchase at cost when you register or on site at Carleton.) Both the Experimental Farm and Vincent Massey Park are perfect places to go for a run or take a stroll and enjoy the weather. Carleton campus is just a 10 minute drive or bus ride from most major tourist destinations in downtown Ottawa and a wonderful location for home base for anyone wanting to explore the city. Ottawa’s core is only 5 km down the Rideau Canal. A perfect distance for a nice jog or bike ride along the canal-side bike paths.
As can be seen on this map Carleton is centrally located between the week’s various meet locations. As such Carleton’s modern suite style residences are our recommended choice of accommodations. Detailed information to book accomodation will be available when registration opens.
