SKI ORIENTEERING AT NAKKERTOK

Organized by the Ottawa Orienteering Club

WHEN: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2008.

Registration opens at 9am with staggered starts from 9:30 to 10:30. The courses close at noon. In case of bad weather or unsafe trail conditions the meet may be cancelled. Check this site for confirmation on the Saturday or call the info line (613 226-2773).

WHERE: NAKKERTOK NORDIC SKI CLUB, CANTLEY, QC  For driving directions to Nakkertok look HERE. Parking, registration and start will be at the main chalet aka "the barn". Watch for orienteering signage.

WHO: For all X/C skiers that love a challenge. There will be three different courses: Short and easy (3K), Medium (6K), and Long (9+K). Instruction will be available for beginners. Do it for fun or try to be the fastest to find all the controls in order. There will be prizes for the fastest ski-Oer in all kinds of categories.

WHAT: It's orienteering on skis with a "blank" trail map. No trail numbers or other signage to confuse you. Look at the sample map on the left. How would you go to control #1 (flag # 66)? Are you sure that's the best way? Trails of all types are used - not just the well-groomed ones. If I told you that only 60% of the trails to be used are groomed for skating - what ski technique would you use? How much do you like to double-pole? : )  The quality of the trail is indicated by the symbol used. Shortcuts are allowed.  On the medium or long courses you only get to see the course map at your start time. There will be a one minute staggered start for all the courses.

EQUIPMENT: You will receive the course map in a plastic case, a waterproof punch card, and some safety pins to attach them to your chest/arm. Trying to ski/navigate with a pole and a map in your hand is very awkward. Bring a compass that you can attach to your wrist. We have some for rent if you do not have your own.  If you plan to go out on one of the longer courses please carry a water bottle. There will be water and other refreshments at the start/finish.

HOW MUCH?: $5 for Nakkertok members. Non-members must buy a day pass of $5.00 and sign a Nakkertok waiver - that's $10.00 in total. Family maximum of $20 for non-members of Nakkertok, $10 for Nakkertok families.

ORGANIZING TEAM: Bill Anderson is the meet director. The supporting cast from the orienteering club will be announced soon. For more information write to: bill DOT Gloria AT rogers DOT com

Be sure to call the info line (613 226-2773) Sunday morning if weather causes any possibilities of cancellation. Last minute notices will also be posted on this web site.
