Challenge the GATs Fall Adventure Run / Rogaine

All are welcome, whether you are recreational or competitive. Solos are accepted for the 2h event only. We would like to encourage you to be part of a team of 2, 3 or 4 for the 2h, 3h and 6h events. The acronym ROGAINE actually means Rugged Outdoor Group Activity Involving Navigation and Endurance.
This year, we are holding a Rogaine workshop and club night at MEC on Friday, September 28nd (delayed one week because of the tornadoes). The club night (with a 10% discount for OOC club members on purchases - see below for the 'fine print') will be from 5-9pm. The Rogaine workshop will be in the upstairs board room from 6:30-8:30pm. Open to all .... we will be covering topics such as:
- navigation/map reading,
- route choice/winning routes,
- nutrition and prep,
- team dynamics
- .... plus a sneak preview of the map by the course setters.
Never done a Rogaine before? Come and see what we are about. Experienced at Rogaines? Learn some of the finer points from experienced rogainers and adventure racers. Seating is limited. Please complete this form if you plan to attend. Cost is $10/person payable at the door.
The fine print for discounts at MEC:
- 10% discount on everything (including bikes and boats). The only exceptions are Blundstones, Birkenstocks, and Glerups.
- The 10% does not get added on top of products already on clearance, OMD products or products that get a discount from packages; it applies only to regular priced products.
- Discount extends beyond what is in stock in the store at the time of the club night. Staff should offer omnichannel service to members if they can’t find what they are looking for in store.
Welcome to a great day of adventure, food and comraderie. A ROGAINE starts with participants visiting as many checkpoints as they can (or wish to) to collect points within the course time limit. It is up to participants to choose their own unique route around the course and between checkpoints using a course map and compass.
The 3h and 6h events are team events with two, three or four members. The price includes a hot banquet-style meal and the awards party for both events.
The two hour event is designed for families, clubs, juniors, solos and those new to orienteering. The price includes snacks and prizes.
We are also offering an introductory package designed for families or those who are new to orienteering and map reading. The package cost is $50 which includes entry in the 2h event for two adults and any number of children 15 and under.
The 6h event course will cover an area up to 25km² using a detailed topographical map. The 3h course covers ~15km2 and the 2h covers ~10km2.

Location and Directions
Base Camp is at La Cabane en bois rond (Corporation des Ainés de la Cabane). There will be a remote start provided by bus for the 3h and 6h event. The 2h event will start and finish at La Cabane.

- Teams collect points for each checkpoint visited.
- The point value of each checkpoint is shown on the map.
- Your finish time is not recorded until ALL members of the team have crossed the finish line.
- If you arrive after the time limit, 10 points will be deducted for each minute late.
- Ties will be broken by order of arrival at the finish.
NB: All teams must check-in (for safety purposes) by downloading the information from their SI timing chip at the finish.
Results will be available after the event at La Cabane and posted at ottawaoc.ca.
Each participant is required to carry the following equipment while on the course:
- Compass (available for rent at the event)
- Map (given at registration)
Each team is required to carry the following equipment while on the course:
- SI timing chip to record that you have been to a checkpoint
- 2h and 3h teams must have a SI timing stick (available for rent when registering for $5)
- The 6 hour teams will be given a SI 10 or SI 11 that holds 60 controls. This is included in their registration fee.
Teams participating in the 6 hour category are also required to carry the following items:
- Emergency Blanket
- Flashlight or head lamp
- First Aid kit
For All Participants: The following equipment is not mandatory but is highly recommended depending on the weather conditions:
- Basic first-aid kit
- Trail-running shoes or walking boots
- Long pants
- Synthetic clothing + extra clothing in a waterproof bag
- Water and high energy food (there will be water in a few spots on the course)
** It is up to competitors to use the map and compass to navigate to each control. No other navigational tools are permitted to be used (you may carry phones and GPS devices with you for post-race training and safety purposes).
Equipment vendor o-store.ca will be set up at the event site all day. If you wish to buy a high quality compass, SI timing chip or any other orienteering equipment or clothing you will be able to do so from them either before or after your event.
Snacks will be provided for the 2h participants. A hot meal is included in the registration fee for the 3h and 6h participants. People in the 2h event are welcome to stay for the hot meal served at 15:30 at an additional cost of $15.

Introductory Registration Package
The introductory package is designed for families or those who are new to orienteering and would like to enter the 2 hour Rogaine. The package cost is $50 which includes entry for two adults and any number of children 15 and under. If needed, there is free SI (timing chip) rental plus the opportunity to attend a complimentary 1/2 hour map reading session. Please make sure that you indicate that you would need to rent a compass ($5 charge) or SI stick (free) on the registration form as we have limited availability. Additional adults on the same team may be included at a reduced rate of $15/person. Please make sure you use the separate registration form to get the correct pricing.

All transaction fees (Zone4 and credit card) are included in the price of the event.
Bus transport to the remote start for the 3h and 6h is included in the price.
All Juniors (age is <21 on December 31st of event year) receive a discount of $10 off the adult race fee.
Orienteering Ottawa Members receive a discount of $5 (Become a member). If you are a new member and you join in the fall, your membership is good for the following year as well.
Refunds / Cancellation Policy
Full refund minus an administration fee of $10 for 2h teams, $20 for 3h/6h teams is available until Sunday, October 15th. There is no refund after October 15th.
In the event that a race is cancelled or postponed due to factors beyond our control (including, but not limited to, severe weather, flood, pandemic, or any factor that may make the operation of the event dangerous to participants, staff and volunteers), Orienteering Ottawa will make every effort to reschedule the race to a later date of its choosing. However, no refunds will be issued if a re-scheduled date is not possible. If a new date is offered, no refund will be granted to registrants who are unable to participate in the rescheduled event.
