Day 3, Monday, July 31, Night-O

Rivermead
Sample of Rivermead map.

Night Orienteering has been called ‘the second most fun you can have in the dark.’ Let’s find out if that is true.

As part of the Canada 150 Orienteering Festival Orienteering Ottawa is scheduling a Night-O event.

  • The venue : the historic Rivermead Golf Club in Gatineau Quebec. Rivermead was founded from rolling farm fields over 100 years ago. In the intervening years patches of large trees have grown up between the fairways. As Orienteering Ottawa members found at a test event last year orienteering on this golf course is not a ‘walk in the park’.
  • Directions : Cross the Ottawa River on the Island Park Bridge. L onto Blvd. du Lucerne, course is 3km on right at Chemin du Rivermead. 45o 23.695'N   75o 47.512 W
  • The date : Monday, July 31st, 2017
  • The format : There will be three courses – Each course will have a separate mass start with the Short participants starting at dusk as soon as the last golfers have cleared the course. Intermediate and Advanced courses will have one, two or three ‘butterfly loops’.  It will be VERY IMPORTANT that participants pick up only the map assigned to their name/ number.
  • Schedule :
    • 7pm Clubhouse open for orienteering arrivals and registration/check-in. Orienteering entertainment available
    • 7:30 Canadian Orienteering Team member Eric Kemp will be talking about his experience at the recent World Orienteering Championships in Estonia. Routes and tracking replay will be displayed on a large screen TV in the golf club house. All are welcome even if you are not participating in the Night-O
    • 8:45 Mass start of Short course
    • 9:00 Mass start of Intermediate course
    • 9:10 Mass start of Advanced course
  • Course Stats :
Course Classes Scale Length
(km)
Short F12-, F14-, F75+, F80+, F85+, M12-, M14-, M80+, M85+, Open 1 1:5000 3.0
Intermediate F16-, F45+, F55+, F65+,  M16-, M65+, M75+, Open 2 1:5000 4.2
Advanced F20--, F21+. F35+, M20-, M21+ M35+, M45+, M55+ 1:5000 5

This is meant to be a fun event. Participants and spectators can enjoy food and beverages in the Rivermead clubhouse before, during and after the race.

Special rules: Of course with orienteering on a golf course and use of the clubhouse we want to protect the property from damage.

  • No metal spikes may be worn anywhere on the golf course property. We may wear rubber soled O-shoes but running shoes will be good enough.
  • Passage on the course over any golf greens or through sand traps is forbidden. The greens are marked in olive and will be overprinted with a purple hatching. If you find yourself in a sand trap please use one of the nearby rakes to erase your footprints!!
  • Clean off or remove your shoes before entering the clubhouse after your race. There are shoe brushes located by most entrances.
  • This is a private golf course with its own dress code. Participants and attendants should all respect their standards and refrain from wearing tattered jeans, shorts that are too short, tee-shirts, tank tops, etc.

Finally, we are very thankful to the Rivermead Golf Club and their past president, Nancy Desormeaux, for making the course and the clubhouse available for us. They are doing this partly in recognition of the Canada 150 event and partly to experiment with bringing an alternate activity to their grounds. Night Orienteering is one of few activities that will not interfere with their golfers. Please return their favour by patronizing their food and beverage service. It would be very bad form to bring your own meal or drinks to this event.

Day 4, Tuesday, August 1, Back to the Barrens

Sample of Novice-Intermediate Controls
Wellness map
Sample of Intermediate-Advanced Controls
Barrens

Enjoy a day of self directed training at one of Ottawa’s most beautiful orienteering sites.  A training map at 1:10 000 on legal paper will display a number of control sites which you may chose to visit in any order or on self designed courses. There is something for everyone.

The Eco-Wellness Centre portion of the map displays Novice-Intermediate Level controls whereas the Barrens portion has Intermediate control sites close to the newly mapped mountain bike trail and more Advanced control sites scattered throughout the more technical areas of the map. Control sites will be open from 9 AM to 6 PM Tuesday August 1 and marked with numbered control flags (no SI or punches).

Parking : Available at the Carp Ecowellness Centre (enter  from  2386 Thomas A. Dolan Parkway) You may also chose to park along Thomas A. Dolan Parkway closer to the Barrens start (approximately 2 km east of the Wellness Centre – see rough location map).

Day 5, Wednesday, August 2, Retr-O

What to Expect at the Retr-O

Retro-O
Sample of Retr-O map.

Registration / Race Kit Pick-up / Information Desk : open 8am - 10am.

Directions: From Ottawa take Quebec hwy 5, Exit Old Chelsea.  Turn left through the village and continue 13 km and turn left onto Fortune Lake Parkway.  Keep left to continue up the hill to Camp Fortune and follow signs to registration.  45o 23.695'N  75o 47.512 W

Start times : No pre-assigned start times; start on your own time but no later than 11am. First bus to  Retr-O start:  9 am.

Timing : last start : 11am, Course time limit : 3 hours, Course closing : 2 pm

Retro-O or Retrospective Orienteering is an orienteering competition held in the style of many years past.

At the Canada 150 Orienteering Festival in Ottawa, Canada we will be recreating as much as possible the courses from the very first Canadian Orienteering Championships held in the Ottawa area in 1968. This will be the third re-creation of the now-famous Blue course, having previously been replicated in 1978 and 1987.

“As much as possible” means some things will be the same as it was in 1968; some things will be different.

The Assembly Area / Event Arena will be at the Camp Fortune Ski Area located within the Gatineau Park a short distance north of Ottawa.  The area will open at 8 AM.

Participants in the Retr-O will be bussed or car pooled to the remote start location. No start times will be pre-assigned. Participants may start on their own time. The last allowable start will be 11 AM.

Awards : All participants will receive an electronic certificate recognizing their participation at this historic event and comparing their time to the results of 1968.

Here is a rundown of the similarities and differences.

Map :

Same as 1968 :

      • Black and white (grayscale)
      • Scale 1:20,000
      • Meridians to magnetic north

Differences :

      • Meridians angled about 45 degrees from the top of the paper
      • Contour interval 6 metres instead of 20 feet.

Courses :

Same as 1968 :

      • Course Classes Scale Length
        (km)
        Yellow F45+, F55+, F65+, M65+, Open Y 1:20,000 B&W 4.2
        Red F20-, F21+, F35+,  M20-, M35+, M45+, M55+, Open R 1:20,000 B&W 6
        Blue M21+ 1:20,000 B&W 9
      • Control features will be in the center of a circle but the feature may not necessarily be on the map.
      • Control descriptions will be in English (and French). Symbolic descriptions did not come to orienteering until the 1980s. Descriptions tended to be ‘wordy’ Sample: On the small terrace / Sur la petite terrasse

Differences :

      • A few control points have to be moved slightly to comply with park rules to not place control beside standing or running water.

Alternative Event :   Age divisions F12-, M12-, F14-, M14-, F16-, M16-, F75+, M75+ and older are being directed to the alternative orienteering event at Camp Fortune.  Course Lengths:  Novice: 2.4 km, Intermediate : 2.6 km, advanced : 4.0 km

Terrain :

Same as 1968 :

      • I wasn’t there in 1968 but I remember orienteering in the area in 1969 and 1970. I’m pretty sure the hills are the same but:

Differences :

      • The trail network has changed and the changes are reflected in the map to be used
      • The beavers have created some new ponds and left others to drain. These changes are reflected in the new map.
      • In the last 20 years there have been two major ices storms that have taken down some trees and caused a lot of new undergrowth to spring up. There will be no green for thicker vegetation on this Retr-O map.

Timing :

Difference :

      • In 1968 participants carried control cards to punch in at each control. Their times were calculated manually. We will be using the SportIdent e-punch system.  All participants must carry their Sport Ident finger stick/ dibbler/ e-card.

Times to Beat :

Blue Course: 9.0 km 1968 John Disley, England 2:06:09 1978 Mark Adams, Que 1:48:39
Red Course: 6.0 km 1968 Patricia Skene, Que 1:42:39 1978 Susan Budge Que 1:21:14
Yellow Course: 4.2 km 1968 Beattie Mackenzie Que 1:30:55
        Irene Jensen Que 1:47:05

Additional Course Options :

For those who do not wish to run one of the above 3 courses, there will be 3 additional courses (novice (2.4 km) , intermediate (2.6 km ) and  advanced ( 4.1km)) on full color maps, 1:10,000, contours 3 metres, starting and ending at Camp Fortune, with an uphill walk of 850 metres to the start.

Special Notes :

Day-of registration will be permitted at the Camp Fortune Lodge starting at 8 am, until 10 am or until maps run out.  If you have not registered on Zone4, you can This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to reserve a map.

The 200 year old town of Perth makes for a fantastic sprint orienteering venue. It features old buildings with a variety of passageways and blocks with assorted buildings and open spaces. There are parks with beautiful rock outcrops (filled with great orienteering detail) and forest spaces with scenic paths. The town's canals and waterways add extra barriers to make the route choices that much harder to figure out. It's as good as sprint orienteering gets! You will definitely need to know all your sprint symbols and brush up on which ones are passable and which ones aren't (hint: see the two different colours of water in the map sample).

During and after the sprint we will have for sale Perth Brewery beer and great food (short ribs tacos and vegetarian chili) by Stone Cellar. You will be able to watch the race, eat tacos and enjoy a beer right by the finish at the Crystal Palace.

Following the sprint, pick up your free map of Perth for the Perth Trivia Challenge from the registration/information desk.

Medals will be awarded at the Banquet August 4.

Day 10, Monday, August 7, Relay (HPP Fundraiser)

Each year at the Canadian Championships the High Performance Committee hosts an “extra” event as a fundraiser for the High Performance Program.  This year the Relay on the last day of O-Fest 150 will be that event.  Entry in the relay is included in both the entire Festival package, and the COC package.  You can also signup for the relay separately.  Here is the info you want to know:

3rd leg – Intermediate Course, 2.5 to 3.0 km.

Team Entries :  There will be team registration forms available at the Registration/Information Desk throughout O-Fest 150, to collect names of team members, order of running and SI numbers.   Entries will need to be completed and returned to the Registration/Information Desk by “closing time” on Sunday, after the Long event.

Registration Fee / Fundraising :  All registration fees from the Relay go to support Orienteering Canada’s High Performance Program.  Anyone who has not paid for a relay entry with their O-Fest 150 registration will be able to do so when the team registration form is submitted.  Registration fee is $20 for adults, $15 for juniors (under 21 as of the end of the year).

Thank you for supporting our High Performance athletes!
